Ørsted and PGE have started offshore construction on the Baltica 2 project in the Polish Baltic Sea, with the first monopiles installed by Van Oord. The 1.5 GW wind farm, expected to be fully commissioned in 2027, will feature 111 monopiles and generate enough power for 2.5 million Polish households.
Ørsted and PGE have moved ahead with full-scale offshore construction activities on the Baltica 2 project, with the first foundations successfully installed in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea, according to an official announcement. The 1.5 GW wind farm is Poland's largest offshore wind project, expected to generate sufficient power for 2.5 million Polish households. The installation campaign, carried out by Van Oord, will install 111 monopiles: 107 for wind turbines and four for offshore substations, continuing until the fourth quarter of 2026.
Ørsted is a Danish renewable energy company, while PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna is Poland's largest energy company, with the wind farm built, owned, and operated in a 50/50 partnership. The monopiles are approximately 100 metres long, with diameters exceeding 10 metres, averaging 1,500 tonnes each, designed to support wind turbines for up to 30 years in harsh marine conditions. Baltica 2 has a 25-year inflation-protected contract for difference with the Polish state, has obtained all permits, and has signed a grid connection contract with Polish transmission system operator PSE.
This development matters for Poland's energy security and transition, as the wind farm will generate 5-6 TWh annually, providing a stable source of zero-emission energy while reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports. The project is expected to be fully commissioned in 2027, with first electricity flowing within one year. The installation uses Van Oord's offshore installation vessel Aeolus and heavy-lift vessel Svanen.
For the offshore wind industry, the project brings jobs and industrial development to Poland for decades. Stakeholders including the Polish government, energy consumers, and supply chain partners stand to benefit from strengthened energy security and renewable capacity.
