Ørsted has expanded its US onshore footprint by commencing construction of the 200 MW Blackwater Solar project in New Mexico, backed by domestic sourcing and local wetland conservation initiatives.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA —Danish energy group Ørsted has expanded its onshore operations into New Mexico with the commencement of civil works on a 200 MW solar generation facility in Roosevelt County. Positioned between Portales and Clovis within the Southwest Power Pool electrical grid, the Blackwater Solar farm is scheduled to reach commercial operation by late 2027. Energy generated from the site will be delivered under a long-term power purchase agreement designed to fulfill expanding industrial electricity needs across the region. Solar modules for the site are being provided by US-based manufacturer First Solar.

This initiative represents a strategic geographic expansion for clean power infrastructure in the American Southwest, addressing rising corporate demand for reliable clean capacity in high-load regional power markets. By pairing power generation with localized ecosystem restoration, the project establishes an integrated framework for utility-scale energy developments operating within environmentally sensitive regions.

The expansion reflects wider industrial efforts to bolster domestic supply chains through American-manufactured equipment, mitigating international trade vulnerabilities and aligning with domestic content incentives. Local government and public services will also experience direct fiscal benefits, as the utility asset is forecasted to yield roughly $18 million in property tax payments over its operational lifecycle, funding local infrastructure, public safety, and school systems.

From an investment standpoint, the long-term off-take structure reduces market risk for power producers while securing predictable power costs for commercial off-takers amid increasing electrification demands. Additionally, corporate environmental strategy is shifting toward comprehensive land stewardship, demonstrated by a $100,000 funding allocation to the Playa Lakes Joint Venture to restore an 8.8-acre playa wetland near Melrose, supporting regional hydrology and wildlife biodiversity.

Ørsted is a multinational energy enterprise specializing in offshore and onshore wind, solar photovoltaic, and battery storage projects. In the US, the firm operates more than 6 gigawatts of onshore renewable energy capacity spanning eight states.
