The Airports Authority of India is progressing with the completion of terminal expansions across 14 domestic airports by the end of 2026. Backed by a ₹45 billion capital expenditure plan, the infrastructure overhaul aims to support aggressive fleet expansions by Indian carriers and enhance regional connectivity.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is advancing a nationwide infrastructure upgrade, targeting the completion of terminal expansions and facility modernizations at 14 regional and metropolitan airports by the end of 2026. The statutory body, operating under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, manages both commercial airspace and civil aviation ground infrastructure across the country. Current upgrade sites include key hubs such as Chennai, Goa, Patna, and Leh, utilizing a ₹45 billion capital expenditure allocation for the current fiscal year. This follows an identical capital outlay from the previous year, which focused on runway enhancements, taxiways, and the addition of 30 aircraft parking bays.

Expanding physical aviation infrastructure is critical to absorbing the rapid capacity additions occurring within the domestic aviation market. Major carriers, led by IndiGo and Akasa Air, inducted over 30 new aircraft in the first half of 2026 alone. Without corresponding ground infrastructure and terminal capacity, these fleet expansions face severe operational bottlenecks and elevated turnaround times.

This decentralized expansion directly aligns with the second phase of the national regional connectivity scheme, aimed at integrating tier-two and tier-three cities into the broader economic framework. The concurrent launch of operations at newly upgraded facilities, including the recently inaugurated Jodhpur terminal and the upcoming Bhogapuram airport, reflects a coordinated policy push to distribute air traffic away from highly congested primary metropolises.

For aviation stakeholders and institutional investors, sustained public capital expenditure into regional airport infrastructure provides a tangible foundation for long-term route profitability. Aircraft lessors, ground handling operators, and commercial retail vendors stand to benefit as widened operational networks create scalable revenue opportunities across emerging regional markets.
