The Airports Authority of India has launched a 386.4 million INR tender to upgrade the dormant Valmiki Nagar airstrip into a Code-2B category airport. This project aims to enhance regional connectivity and support eco-tourism near the India-Nepal border through modernized terminal and ATC infrastructure.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has officially opened the bidding process for a INR 386.4 million project to modernize the Valmiki Nagar Airport in Bihar’s West Champaran district. According to official disclosures, the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract entails the installation of a prefabricated steel terminal, a pre-engineered Air Traffic Control tower, and a fire station. The project is expected to reach completion within 11 months, enabling the facility to handle Code-2B category aircraft.

AAI is a statutory body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation responsible for creating, upgrading, and managing civil aviation infrastructure in India. This development serves as a pivotal move to revitalize a facility that has remained largely inactive since its construction in 1964. By integrating the airport into the regional aviation network, the government intends to reduce the logistical burden on the state's primary hub in Patna. The upgrade is particularly significant for the tourism and trade sectors, as the airport provides direct access to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve and the border regions of Nepal. Businesses in North Bihar, specifically across Bettiah, Motihari, and Gopalganj, are expected to benefit from improved cargo and passenger accessibility.

The initiative is part of a broader 2025 agreement between the state government and AAI to develop six regional airports. Strategically, this underscores a shift toward strengthening Tier-3 connectivity under national aviation schemes, facilitating 19-seater aircraft operations in underserved zones. For investors and aviation stakeholders, these site-specific upgrades, including a similar INR 431.3 million runway project in Muzaffarpur, indicate a sustained capital commitment toward decentralized aerospace infrastructure in East India.
