The Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI) has issued a grant approaching $1 million to ACRE Africa to broaden climate-smart insurance access for 300,000 smallholders across 15 regions of Tanzania, enhancing agricultural resilience through digital finance.

KENYA; TANZANIA —The Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI) has finalized a funding agreement valued at $997,000 with Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise (ACRE) to extend climate risk insurance services to small-scale agricultural producers within the East African market. This capital infusion, augmented by $437K million in corporate contributions, supports a multi-region initiative aimed at deploying digital registration architectures, automated premium collection mechanisms, and streamlined claims handling processes across fifteen administrative zones.

Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise (ACRE) operates as a specialized risk mitigation institution headquartered in Kenya, maintaining regional operations across multiple African territories to connect primary producers with credit facilities, agronomic advisory services, and digital distribution networks. The newly structured intervention seeks to protect agricultural yields against escalating climate volatility by deploying data-driven insurance coverage alongside technology-enabled financial tools tailored for rural farming communities.

This initiative carries substantial operational consequences for financial institutions, agricultural input suppliers, and commercial off-takers operating throughout the region. By embedding digital insurance infrastructure into local agricultural supply chains, the project establishes scalable distribution frameworks via community-level agents, thereby addressing persistent financial exclusion barriers among smallholders and vulnerable rural demographics.

Corporate investors and commercial lenders evaluating the East African agricultural ecosystem gain expanded visibility into rural risk management through this deployment. The integration of advanced data analytics with micro-insurance products creates predictable risk-assessment parameters, facilitating secure capital deployment toward smallholder farming operations and bolstering long-term commercial productivity within the regional economy.
