EUROPE —Aerospacelab has been selected as a key Prime Contractor for the low Earth orbit (LEO) segment of the European Commission’s Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite (IRIS²) programme. Under the €2.4 billion contract, the company will build 264 satellite platforms and deliver the fully integrated satellites required for the LEO constellation.
The satellites are planned to become part of Europe’s sovereign connectivity infrastructure, with deployment targeted by 2030. IRIS² is designed to provide secure communications for European governments, institutions, defence and security services, as well as citizens, while improving resilience against disruption and reducing exposure to foreign interference.
Aerospacelab’s manufacturing role gives the company responsibility for a substantial portion of the physical satellite infrastructure underpinning the programme. The scale of the order also creates a long-term requirement for satellite production, integration and delivery capacity within Europe’s space manufacturing sector.
The programme has implications beyond satellite manufacturing because IRIS² is intended to strengthen European communications autonomy. Government agencies and security organizations are expected to be among the key users, while telecommunications and connectivity stakeholders may benefit from infrastructure designed to support secure and resilient communications across Europe.
For European aerospace and industrial suppliers, the programme represents demand for satellite platforms, components, electronics, integration services and associated manufacturing capabilities. The use of multiple European space initiatives within the region’s broader strategic infrastructure agenda also supports efforts to maintain critical space and communications capabilities within European supply chains.
For businesses and investors, the €2.4 billion award provides Aerospacelab with a substantial contracted manufacturing programme and increases the importance of production capacity capable of delivering satellites at constellation scale. The 2030 deployment objective also establishes a defined timeframe for manufacturing and integration activities associated with the LEO segment.
