The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and Family Bank have finalized a USD 10 million trade finance facility aimed at expanding foreign-currency access for Kenyan small and medium-sized enterprises. The initiative targets critical sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, health, and renewable energy.

KENYA —The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is a multilateral development finance institution established to contribute to the economic development and social progress of African countries. Family Bank is a commercial bank licensed in Kenya that provides financial services to small and medium-sized enterprises and retail customers.

A new USD 10 million trade finance line of credit has been established to increase foreign-currency funding availability for local corporate entities and smaller businesses operating within Kenya. This funding vehicle is structured to assist enterprises in securing essential imports, acquiring productive operational inputs, and integrating more deeply into domestic, regional, and international value networks.

The deployment of this financial facility addresses chronic capital deficits faced by smaller enterprises, particularly within developing economies where liquidity constraints frequently hinder expansion. By injecting foreign currency into local commercial channels, the partnership mitigates foreign exchange risks and facilitates smoother cross-border transactions for domestic operators.

Targeted sectors include agricultural production, industrial manufacturing, healthcare services, and renewable energy development, alongside focused allocations for women-owned enterprises. These interventions align with broader regional integration frameworks, including the African Continental Free Trade Area, designed to enhance intra-continental commerce and economic diversification.

Financial institutions and commercial lenders across the region are positioned to scale up their lending portfolios targeting underserved market segments. For corporate investors and market participants, the arrangement signals improved liquidity channels and heightened risk-mitigation capacities for supply chain operations across East Africa.
