African Development Bank and UNICEF deploy $54.8 million to restore critical water infrastructure in Port Sudan

The African Development Bank Group and UNICEF have launched a $54.8 million initiative to rehabilitate water and sanitation infrastructure in Port Sudan. The project aims to secure safe water access for 750,000 residents and internally displaced persons amid a severe regional humanitarian crisis.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB), a multilateral development finance institution, alongside UNICEF, a United Nations agency focused on children's welfare, has allocated $54.8 million to rehabilitate critical water and sanitation networks in Port Sudan. According to official disclosures, the initiative is financed by the African Development Fund and targets the restoration of pipelines, distribution systems, and local utility capacities.

This intervention addresses a severe infrastructure deficit exacerbated by a massive influx of internally displaced populations, which has reduced municipal water supply to less than 40 percent of total demand. Securing reliable hydration and sanitation is essential to prevent widespread waterborne disease outbreaks among highly vulnerable demographics.

The project will directly benefit approximately 750,000 individuals across Port Sudan and neighboring conflict-affected regions, including North and South Kordofan. By upgrading municipal utility capabilities and integrating climate-resilient designs, the initiative aligns with broader international development policies aimed at transitioning from emergency relief to sustainable urban service delivery.
