The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $140 million loan to develop climate-resilient irrigation and agro-industrial infrastructure in Uganda’s Bunyoro subregion. The $207 million initiative aims to transition local farming from rain-fed reliance to commercial agriculture, stimulating regional job creation and enhancing food security across East Africa.
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is a multilateral development financial institution dedicated to fostering economic growth and social progress across the African continent. According to official disclosures, the institution authorized a $140 million loan for a comprehensive agro-industrial and irrigation initiative in Uganda’s Bunyoro subregion. The broader $207 million program is co-financed by the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Ugandan government, and other partners.
This capital injection addresses critical vulnerabilities in rain-dependent farming by financing large-scale water conveyance systems. The project will initially irrigate 4,000 hectares of farmland, expanding to 13,000 hectares in subsequent phases, directly impacting the regional agriculture, logistics, and food processing sectors.
By integrating cold chain facilities, post-harvest storage, and business development support for local agribusinesses, the initiative reduces supply chain waste and improves market access. For investors and commercial enterprises, this modernization unlocks new opportunities in Uganda’s agricultural value chains, supporting the commercialization of smallholder farming and stimulating agro-processing industries in the region.
