Airtel secures $1 billion for Nxtra data centers from Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle, Anchorage

Bharti Airtel has raised $1 billion for its data center subsidiary Nxtra from Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle, and Anchorage Capital, with Airtel also participating. The funding will expand Nxtra’s capacity from 300 MW toward a 1 GW target as India’s data center market grows at 21% CAGR through 2030.

Bharti Airtel has announced a $1 billion investment in its subsidiary Nxtra Data Limited from affiliates of Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle, and Anchorage Capital, according to company disclosures. Airtel will also participate in the funding round and retain a controlling stake in Nxtra, subject to regulatory approvals in India. Alpha Wave Global will invest $435 million, Carlyle $240 million, Anchorage Capital $35 million, with the remaining amount contributed by Airtel. Final shareholdings will be determined after post-closing adjustments.

Nxtra currently operates approximately 300 MW of data center capacity and aims to scale to 1 GW within the next few years, targeting a 25 percent market share.

The investment underscores global institutional appetite for India’s rapidly expanding data center sector, which is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 21 percent between 2024 and 2030 to reach nearly 3,400 MW of IT capacity, according to a Savills India report. Nxtra has positioned itself as the first data center company in India to deploy AI at scale for predictive maintenance, energy efficiency, and automated operations.

For enterprises, hyperscalers, and government organisations, the expanded capacity addresses rising demand for cloud services and digital transformation infrastructure. Competitors including Reliance Jio’s digital infrastructure arm and global players such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google—which operate their own cloud regions in India—may face intensified service competition as Nxtra broadens its portfolio. The funding structure, combining strategic investors with operational control retained by Airtel, could serve as a template for infrastructure carve-outs seeking growth capital without diluting parent company governance.

Bharti Airtel is an Indian multinational telecommunications and digital infrastructure company listed on the National Stock Exchange. Nxtra Data Limited is Airtel’s wholly owned subsidiary focused on data center operations.
