SWEDEN —Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem to supply heat transfer equipment for Stockholm Exergi’s large-scale bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility in Stockholm, Sweden. The equipment package forms part of Saipem’s EPC scope for the project, which is designed to capture carbon dioxide generated from the combustion of biogenic fuels at Stockholm Exergi’s biomass-based combined heat and power plant.
The facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2028 and is expected to capture, liquify and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. At full operation, the plant will be among the largest facilities of its type and is intended to contribute to Stockholm Exergi’s objective of achieving net-negative emissions through the permanent removal of biogenic carbon from the atmosphere.
Alfa Laval will provide a Ziepack gas-gas interchanger together with multiple process plate-and-frame heat exchangers. These systems will be integrated into the carbon capture process to recover and reuse heat, an important requirement because capturing and liquifying CO₂ requires substantial energy. Recovered energy will be returned to Stockholm Exergi’s existing district heating network, linking the carbon removal process with the city’s established heat infrastructure.
The project has implications for Sweden’s energy and climate infrastructure as BECCS is being developed as a mechanism for generating negative emissions while retaining energy production from renewable biomass. Its implementation also creates demand for specialized thermal equipment, process engineering and carbon transport and storage infrastructure, with potential relevance for suppliers supporting industrial decarbonization projects across Europe.
