VIETNAM; FRANCE —Alstom and Vingroup have signed a rolling stock contract and Technology License Agreement (TLA) covering 200 Metropolis trainsets for Hanoi’s urban rail projects. The agreement will also transfer train manufacturing and assembly technology to Vietnam, allowing part of the programme to be executed locally.
The first 83 trainsets will be designed and manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes Petite-Forêt facility in France. For the remaining 117 trainsets, Alstom will provide technology, engineering expertise, production tooling and key components to support Vingroup’s manufacturing and assembly activities in Vietnam.
The contracted rolling stock will consist of new-generation five-car metro trains configured for GoA4, the highest level of automated operation, allowing fully automated and driverless service. The trains will use aluminium car bodies to reduce axle loads and track wear, while a wide-body configuration will increase available interior space and passenger capacity.
The braking system will combine regenerative and disc brakes, allowing braking energy to be recovered while providing conventional braking capability. These specifications position the trainsets for automated urban metro operations requiring high passenger capacity and energy-efficient rolling stock.
For Vietnam’s rail industry, the main impact of the agreement is the development of domestic train manufacturing and assembly capability alongside the supply of imported complete trainsets. The transfer of production know-how, tooling and engineering support gives Vingroup a defined role in assembling and manufacturing 117 trainsets for Hanoi’s urban rail programme.
Vingroup is a Vietnamese business group with operations that include infrastructure, industry, real estate and services. Alstom is a France-based rail technology company active in rolling stock, signalling and rail infrastructure. The agreement links Alstom’s rolling stock technology with Vingroup’s local industrial capabilities and could support greater domestic participation in Vietnam’s urban rail supply chain.
