INDIA —AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited has secured a USD 100 million loan facility to advance the AM Green Ammonia Project, a large-scale renewable-powered ammonia production plant in India. The financing is jointly backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japan through the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience framework. The project involves retrofitting an existing natural gas and urea manufacturing asset to operate entirely on renewable energy inputs, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes. Financing is channelled through the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2, managed by ADB and co-financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
This initiative represents the inaugural transaction executed under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience (ACCEL) mechanism, which was introduced to mitigate economic volatility stemming from fluctuating energy markets and to fortify regional supply chain resilience across Asia and the Pacific. By shifting industrial feedstock synthesis away from fossil fuel dependency, the project seeks to establish a commercial blueprint for low-emission chemical manufacturing. The endeavor aligns with broader regional objectives to diversify energy portfolios, secure critical industrial inputs, and foster export-oriented manufacturing capabilities in emerging Asian markets.
The development directly impacts the agricultural and industrial chemical sectors, particularly fertilizer manufacturers dependent on stable ammonia supplies, as well as renewable energy developers and equipment providers. Policymakers and industry stakeholders across South Asia and international trade partners observe this transition as a benchmark for heavy industry decarbonization. The project introduces new commercial pathways for cross-border development finance and bilateral cooperation between multilateral institutions and sovereign funding agencies focused on structural climate transition.
For corporate operators and institutional investors, the venture signals growing deployment opportunities within green industrial infrastructure and sustainable commodity export markets. Financial participants gain early-mover exposure to asset-backed green hydrogen and ammonia value chains, supported by sovereign-backed de-risking instruments. Market participants are anticipated to evaluate similar brownfield conversion models across carbon-intensive manufacturing sectors to align with evolving regulatory mandates and long-term decarbonization commitments.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a multilateral financial institution dedicated to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, the organization is owned by 69 member economies and provides loans, technical assistance, grants, and equity investments to promote social and economic development.
