AMEA Power has commissioned its 120 MWp Doornhoek Solar PV Project in South Africa's North West Province, the first project under REIPPPP BW6 programme to reach commercial operations. The USD 120 million facility, generating 325 GWh annually for 97,000 households, was financed by Standard Bank and the Industrial Development Corporation, with local women-owned partners.
AMEA Power has announced the successful commissioning of its 120 MWp solar PV plant in South Africa, marking the first project under Bid Window 6 (BW6) programme of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme to reach commercial operations, according to an official announcement. Located near Klerksdorp in the North West Province, the Doornhoek Solar PV Project will generate approximately 325 GWh of clean electricity annually, supplying an estimated 97,000 households and offsetting more than 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
AMEA Power is a renewable energy company operating in the region. The USD 120 million facility reached commercial operation under AMEA Power as an IPP in partnership with Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Energy, both wholly owned by African women, reflecting AMEA Power's commitment to inclusive economic participation and transformation within South Africa's energy sector. The project was financed through USD 100 million in debt provided by Standard Bank South Africa, alongside USD 8 million in equity funding from the Industrial Development Corporation to support local partner participation.
This development matters for South Africa's energy transition, where the project demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration between government, financiers, and the private sector in delivering nationally prioritised infrastructure. At peak construction, the project employed approximately 1,050 people, contributing to job creation in Klerksdorp and surrounding areas. AMEA Power has implemented a Community Investment and Development Program supporting educational philanthropic initiatives, skills development for vulnerable groups including youth and elderly, and local NPOs, with six schools, four Early Childhood Development centres, and fifteen local NPOs as beneficiaries.
For the renewable energy industry, this marks AMEA Power's first operational asset in South Africa, reinforcing the company's growing footprint across Africa. AMEA Power was awarded two additional projects through Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme in South Africa, both located in the North West Province with capacity exceeding 300 MWh each. Stakeholders including local communities, women-owned enterprises, and South Africa's energy grid stand to benefit from reliable clean electricity and socio-economic development.
