Ark Energy has obtained regulatory approval to connect its Richmond Valley Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System in northern New South Wales to Australia’s National Electricity Market. The milestone supports project financing and construction plans while strengthening the role of hybrid renewable generation and storage in grid reliability.

Ark Energy has secured approval from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and transmission provider Transgrid to connect its Richmond Valley Solar Farm and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to the National Electricity Market (NEM) in northern New South Wales. According to official disclosures, the project satisfied Generator Performance Standards and will connect to the regional 330 kV network through the planned Richmond Valley Switching Station.

The approval follows extensive technical assessments, including network studies, system modelling, simulation exercises and engineering refinements. The development is designed as a hybrid renewable energy facility combining solar generation and large-scale battery storage through a single grid connection point, supported by grid-forming inverter technology.

The project's first phase is expected to include a 200 MWac solar facility alongside a 275 MW / 2,200 MWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery system, with construction targeted to begin later this year. The development is significant for Australia's energy transition, as large-scale storage projects are increasingly required to support grid stability, integrate variable renewable generation and improve electricity supply reliability. The approval also strengthens the outlook for renewable infrastructure investment across New South Wales and the broader Australian power sector.

For investors, utilities and energy-intensive industries, the project highlights growing opportunities in utility-scale storage and hybrid energy assets as electricity markets adapt to higher renewable penetration.

Ark Energy develops utility-scale renewable energy generation and storage projects across New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania.
