INDIA —Bengaluru-headquartered Popo Global, the food and beverage enterprise operating brand portfolios such as The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini, and Smash Guys, secured a private equity investment of INR 5.32 billion from Artal Asia. The transaction grants the global investment affiliate a significant minority stake in the restaurant firm as it prepares to execute a multi-city expansion across India.
Artal Asia functions as an investment affiliate of the global private equity firm Artal Group, specializing in consumer-facing and food industry assets. The entity previously held equity positions in international food chains like Cava and domestic Indian consumer brands including Capital Foods, the maker of Ching’s Secret and Smith & Jones, before its acquisition by Tata Consumer Products. Popo Global, established by founders Nikhil Gupta and Abhijit Gupta, operates across dine-in, delivery, and dark kitchen formats. The business expanded organically from a single establishment in 2017 to a 40-outlet footprint within Bengaluru prior to receiving external growth capital.
The cash infusion underscores a significant shift toward institutionalizing fast-casual and specialty dining operator models within the domestic quick-service and casual restaurant ecosystem. Indian urban food services are witnessing heightened consolidation and scaling demands as consumer preferences migrate toward high-quality, standardized dining formats. Capitalizing on operational infrastructure built within regional clusters, multi-brand hospitality groups are increasingly tapping private equity channels to fund supply chain, technology, and footprint investments needed for cross-regional scaling.
For institutional investors and food service operators, the transaction demonstrates growing appetite for proven regional brand portfolios capable of expanding into tier-one and tier-two metropolitan hubs. Access to strategic private equity backing provides Popo Global with capital reserves to scale restaurant locations, enhance kitchen logistics, and compete with established national food service platforms without compromising product standards.
