INDIA —Indian healthcare provider Aster DM Quality Care has expanded its renewable energy portfolio by commissioning a 10 MW ground-mounted solar plant in Kasargod, Kerala, to supply power to its flagship facility, Aster Medcity. Developed in partnership with Independent Power Producer Oyster Renewable Energy, the installation utilizes bifacial photovoltaic modules to maximize generation in tropical conditions. Operating via Oyster Green Hybrid Two Private Ltd, in which Aster holds a 26% equity stake, the project represents a co-investment of INR 38.7 million from the healthcare group.
This initiative addresses the rising operational costs and intense energy requirements of large-scale medical facilities, which operate round-the-clock. By shifting to a captive clean energy model expected to generate 17.7 million units annually, Aster Medcity will cover over nine-tenths of its electricity demands through renewables, significantly reducing reliance on conventional grid power and cutting annual carbon emissions by approximately 23,138 metric tonnes.
The deployment underscores a broader trend among commercial and industrial entities in India turning to off-site renewable assets to achieve long-term cost predictability and meet corporate environmental benchmarks. Within the healthcare sector, where energy stability is critical, decentralized power arrangements and equity-backed power purchase models offer a repeatable template for institutional sustainability. Based in India, Aster DM Quality Care operates an extensive network of hospitals and clinics, while Mumbai-based Oyster Renewable Energy focuses on developing tailored solar and wind hybrid assets for industrial clients.
For healthcare institutions and infrastructure investors, the integration of captive renewable generation signals a shift toward decarbonizing energy-intensive service sectors. The financial and structural framework utilized in Kerala reflects growing alignment between healthcare providers and private clean energy developers, establishing a model for future sustainability projects across regional commercial markets.
