The Australian Government has finalized Tender 7 of the Capacity Investment Scheme, selecting 19 projects to deliver 7.8 GW of generation. This outcome exceeds the initial 5 GW target and integrates substantial battery storage, supporting grid stability and the national transition toward net-zero targets.

According to official disclosures from the Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Australia’s latest Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) auction has concluded with 19 projects selected to provide 7.8 GW of renewable energy.

The results represent a significant oversubscription of the original 5 GW target. The successful portfolio features a heavy emphasis on reliability, with eight hybrid sites integrating wind or solar with large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), contributing over 2.0 GW (7.9 GWh) of storage capacity to the National Electricity Market (NEM). This development is a critical milestone for Australia’s energy transition, providing enough generation to power over 4 million homes.

For investors and developers, the scale of Tender 7 reinforces the CIS as a primary vehicle for de-risking high-capital renewable projects. The inclusion of major players like Origin Energy, Lightsource bp, and ENGIE across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania underscores strong private sector appetite for the Australian energy transition. Strategically, the tender mandates substantial social and economic reinvestment.

Developers have committed approximately $504.6 million to community benefits and $678.7 million to First Nations participation. Furthermore, the selection supports domestic manufacturing through a $257 million commitment to Australian-made steel. By prioritizing hybrid projects, the government is addressing the intermittency challenges of renewables, signaling that future investment frameworks will likely favor firming technologies that ensure grid resilience.

For the broader industrial sector, the anticipated creation of 19,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent operational roles provides a stable long-term outlook for the regional labor market and infrastructure supply chains.
