Swiss energy group Axpo has brought its first onshore wind farm online in Finland, a 24.8 MW facility in Vörå. The project marks the company's operational entry into Finland’s rapidly decarbonizing electricity market and signals further development plans in a country targeting climate neutrality by 2035.
Axpo has officially inaugurated the Lålax wind farm in the municipality of Vörå, western Finland, marking the Swiss energy company’s first operational onshore wind asset in the country. The facility, which was technically commissioned in September 2025 after an 11-month construction period, consists of four Vestas turbines each rated at 6.2 MW with a hub height of 134 meters. Total installed capacity stands at 24.8 MW, with projected annual output of approximately 70 million kilowatt-hours.
According to official disclosures, the electricity is fed into the transmission grid through a dedicated substation and traded on the power exchange by Axpo Nordic. The project draws on the wind development expertise of Axpo subsidiary Volkswind GmbH, a German-based developer that has delivered more than 100 wind farms totaling over 1,600 MW of installed capacity across Germany and France since being integrated into the group in 2015.
Finland has enacted a legally binding target to achieve climate neutrality by 2035, one of the most ambitious timelines globally. The Lålax project contributes directly to national decarbonization objectives while reinforcing Ostrobothnia’s position as a concentration zone for renewable energy infrastructure. Axpo’s entry into Finnish onshore wind forms part of a broader strategic push into the Nordic market, where the company has built a development pipeline over several years.
For energy-intensive industries and offtakers seeking long-term power purchase agreements in the Nordics, Axpo’s growing operational footprint introduces additional counterparty options in a market characterized by rising demand for clean electricity. The expansion also signals intensifying competition among European utilities for Finnish wind assets, where favorable permitting frameworks and grid access continue to attract capital. Axpo Renewable Finland, the local entity managing the project, operates from Vaasa and intends to advance additional projects, positioning the group as a more significant independent power producer in the region over time.
Axpo Holding AG is a Swiss energy group headquartered in Baden, operating across electricity generation, trading, and distribution with a growing portfolio of renewable assets in Europe and North America.
