BHEL secures INR 210 billion engineering contract for supercritical thermal power expansion

State-owned engineering enterprise Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited has won an engineering, procurement, and construction contract exceeding INR 210 billion from Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited. The domestic award will fund the phase-two development of a supercritical thermal power installation in Uttar Pradesh.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been awarded a domestic engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) package valued at over INR 210 billion, excluding goods and services tax, according to regulatory disclosures.

The contract was secured through an international competitive bidding process initiated by Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited, a joint venture entity co-owned by NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited. BHEL is a public sector engineering and manufacturing enterprise specializing in heavy equipment for power generation, transmission, and defense sectors. The comprehensive operational mandate covers the complete design, engineering, production, supply, construction, testing, and operational commissioning of Stage-II of a major supercritical thermal power plant located in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The timeline stipulates that the extensive industrial package must be completed within 70 months from the official notification date. The announcement coincided with a notable upward movement in the manufacturer’s equity valuation and strong fourth-quarter financial disclosures, including a 156% year-on-year surge in consolidated net profit to INR 12.9 billion and a 37% revenue expansion to INR 123.1 billion.

This allocation underscores a continuous public infrastructure focus on high-efficiency, supercritical thermal technologies to stabilize India’s expanding regional energy grids. By utilizing baseload coal-generation systems that operate at higher temperatures and pressures, the domestic utilities sector can maximize electricity generation per unit of fuel while minimizing relative greenhouse gas footprints compared to legacy power plants.

For industrial suppliers, raw material contractors, and structural engineers, this long-term capital deployment provides highly visible project workflows through the end of the decade. Furthermore, the substantial size of the award enhances the firm’s outstanding order book, validating the technical competence of domestic heavy engineering providers to successfully defend their local market share against international competitors.
