Engineering firm Black & Veatch has been selected to deliver the full engineering design for a 2,400 MW combined-cycle gas power facility in Mailiao, Taiwan. The project is expected to strengthen regional electricity supply, improve generation efficiency, and support the island’s growing industrial power demand.
Black & Veatch has been appointed to lead the complete engineering design for a large-scale combined-cycle gas power facility in the Mailiao region of Taiwan. The project, commissioned by Mai-Liao Power Corporation and executed in collaboration with Formosa Heavy Industry Corporation, will consist of two 1,200 MW H-class generation units with a combined capacity of 2,400 MW.
The development follows Mai-Liao Power Corporation securing a long-term power purchase agreement in 2025, enabling the project to move into the design phase. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate enough electricity to supply roughly 1.8 million households while increasing efficiency in the regional power generation mix.
The investment highlights Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to modernize energy infrastructure while ensuring stable electricity supply for its industrial sector, particularly in manufacturing-heavy regions such as Mailiao. Higher-efficiency combined-cycle technology also supports efforts to improve system reliability and optimize fuel usage within the country’s power grid.
Black & Veatch is a US-based engineering and infrastructure company specializing in energy, water, and telecommunications systems, with major project experience across the APAC region. Formosa Heavy Industry Corporation, part of Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group, provides engineering and fabrication services for large-scale industrial and energy projects. For businesses and investors, the project reflects rising infrastructure spending across Asia’s power sector as governments and utilities seek to balance industrial growth with grid stability and efficiency improvements.
