Boeing moves JDAM Long Range toward production as US Navy seeks greater strike reach

Boeing has received a USD 75 million Undefinitized Contract Action from the US Air Force to begin initial production of the JDAM Long Range payload delivery unit. The weapon is designed to extend precision-strike reach beyond 300 nautical miles, strengthening standoff capabilities for US Navy aircraft in contested operating environments.

Boeing has secured a USD 75 million Undefinitized Contract Action from the US Air Force covering the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit for the Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range program, moving the weapon into initial production. Manufacturing preparations are underway at Boeing’s St. Charles, Missouri, facility, alongside qualification and aircraft-integration activities ahead of initial fielding.

The program is significant because the JDAM Long Range is designed to give aircraft a precision-strike option capable of reaching targets more than 300 nautical miles away while carrying a 500-pound-class payload. The extended engagement distance is intended to reduce the exposure of aircraft operating against increasingly capable air-defense networks, making standoff weapons an important component of modern air operations.

The move follows flight testing conducted off the California coast in April 2026, including initial tests involving an F/A-18 aircraft. The transition toward production indicates that the program is progressing beyond technology demonstration and into the industrial and integration phase required for operational deployment.
