Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has issued a purchase order to Eco Wave Power Global AB for a site assessment study at its Mumbai marine oil terminals. This step advances their 2025 memorandum of understanding to evaluate onshore wave energy integration for India's renewable energy goals.

INDIA —Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has initiated the first implementation phase of its renewable energy agreement by issuing a formal purchase order for a comprehensive site assessment. The evaluation will take place at the energy corporation's marine oil terminals located at Jawahar Deep in Mumbai, focusing on the technical feasibility of deploying innovative shoreline wave energy infrastructure.

Under the terms of the procurement document, the study requires a detailed site evaluation and work plan, a thorough metocean study examining local marine conditions, and a final assessment report scheduled for completion within four months. This technical review aims to provide critical data for evaluating prospective pilot installations at existing coastal operational sites.

This development carries significant weight for the energy sector as major industrial operators increasingly seek to diversify their portfolios with marine-based renewables. By exploring the integration of wave energy generation into existing port and terminal structures, energy firms can leverage established maritime assets without requiring extensive offshore construction. The initiative aligns with broader corporate decarbonization targets and highlights the growing commercial interest in alternative marine power sources.

For the renewable energy industry and regional market stakeholders, the project represents a critical benchmark in unlocking India's substantial coastal energy potential. With official estimates indicating extensive untapped ocean energy capacity along the coastline, successful execution of this assessment could pave the way for larger commercial-scale deployments. Market participants and infrastructure developers view this progression as a key indicator of how traditional oil and gas infrastructure can incorporate clean technology solutions to meet long-term net-zero mandates.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is a government-owned oil and gas enterprise operating multiple domestic refineries and distribution networks across India. Eco Wave Power Global AB specializes in developing patented onshore wave energy technology that captures clean electricity from coastal infrastructure such as breakwaters and piers.
