British Army artillery modernization gathers momentum with Rheinmetall weapon contract for RCH 155 fleet

Rheinmetall has secured a contract in the low three-digit million-euro range to manufacture and supply 155 mm L/52 RC weapon systems for the British Army’s 72 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers. Deliveries are scheduled between May 2028 and June 2031, with production centered at Telford, United Kingdom.

German defence contractor Rheinmetall was awarded a weapon systems supply contract in the second quarter of 2026 valued in the low three-digit million-euro range to equip 72 RCH 155 wheeled self-propelled howitzers for the British Army. Headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, Rheinmetall AG is a major European defence technology group providing armored platforms, weapons, and ammunition systems. Under the terms of the agreement, the company will deliver 72 elevating masses featuring the 155 mm L/52 RC weapon system along with specialized on-board tools, comprehensive training materials, and technical documentation once system qualification is complete.

The weapon system order follows the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence's procurement in May 2026 of 72 RCH 155 platforms through ARTEC GmbH, a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland. Manufacturing of the weapon systems will be localized at Rheinmetall’s new gun production facility in Telford, United Kingdom. Component deliveries and integration are scheduled to run from May 2028 through June 2031, establishing a key operational milestone for domestic defense industrial footprint within the United Kingdom.

This development signifies a substantial transition toward automated operational capabilities within ground-based artillery forces. The RCH 155 design integrates a fully automated 155 mm artillery turret with the established BOXER eight-wheeled armored vehicle platform. Notably, the architecture enables the vehicle to conduct firing operations while in motion, mitigating exposure to counter-battery fire and raising survivability parameters in high-intensity operational environments. High-mobility automated artillery systems are increasingly prioritized across NATO ground forces seeking improved battlefield maneuverability and reduced logistics overhead.

From an economic and policy perspective, assembling defense hardware at the Telford site directly advances host-nation industrial policy aimed at strengthening local defense manufacturing capacity, securing sovereign supply chains, and fostering skilled manufacturing employment.
