Cabinet approves 206.67 billion INR Ahmedabad-Dholera semi high-speed rail corridor

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has authorized a 206.67 billion INR double-line railway project linking Ahmedabad to the Dholera Special Investment Region. Utilizing indigenous technology, the 134-kilometer corridor marks India's first domestic semi high-speed rail initiative designed to integrate regional logistics and industrial hubs.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the construction of a 134-kilometer semi high-speed double-line railway network connecting Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) to Dholera. According to official disclosures, the project requires an estimated capital expenditure of 206.67 billion INR and represents the first domestic semi high-speed rail development built using indigenously engineered technology. The Ministry of Railways will oversee the asset, which is designed under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan framework to streamline multi-modal transportation across the state of Gujarat.

This development is significant as it establishes a vital industrial corridor linking Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the upcoming Dholera Airport, and the maritime heritage complex at Lothal. By reducing transit times, the corridor facilitates efficient daily commuting and transforms freight access for an area encompassing 284 villages and half a million residents.

For the infrastructure, engineering, and manufacturing sectors, this pioneering project serves as a technical benchmark for future domestic high-speed rail networks, shifting dependency away from imported transport technologies. From a policy and climate perspective, the electrified rail project aims to curb logistics costs while advancing national decarbonization targets. Official data indicates the network will reduce carbon emissions by 20 million kilograms and lower fuel imports by 4.8 million liters.
