India's Cabinet Committee on Security has sanctioned an INR 400 billion project to construct eight Next-Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Goa Shipyard Limited will manufacture the stealth warships, bolstering domestic defense industrial production.

INDIA —India’s apex decision-making body on defense, the Cabinet Committee on Security, has approved a major capital acquisition project valued at over INR 400 billion for the construction of eight Next-Generation Corvettes. Commercial contracts with chosen state-backed shipbuilders are slated for execution shortly, marking one of the largest indigenous warship procurement approvals in recent history. The Cabinet Committee on Security is a government committee chaired by the Prime Minister of India that oversees major defense expenditures, national security policy, and strategic appointments.

The procurement marks a critical milestone in India’s maritime strategy to modernize surface combatant capabilities and enforce sea control in the Indian Ocean Region. Designed with reduced radar signatures and advanced combat systems, the new platforms will replace aging naval assets, enhancing fleet readiness for escort, surface attack, and coastal security operations without relying on foreign shipbuilders.

Under the approved framework, state-run defense shipbuilders Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Goa Shipyard Limited will share the construction load. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers is a Kolkata-based premier defense shipyard specializing in warship construction, while Goa Shipyard Limited is a state-owned shipbuilder located in Vasco da Gama, Goa, focused on patrol vessels and combatants. The split contract model distributes high-value defense orders, providing substantial long-term revenue visibility across state shipyard order books and stimulating regional ancillary manufacturing clusters.

This capital infusion reinforces the domestic industrial supply chain by expanding opportunities for tier-one defense suppliers, steel producers, electronics firms, and marine component developers. Subcontractors specializing in propulsion, radar systems, and precision weaponry stand to gain significant order flow over the multi-year construction lifecycle, accelerating indigenous technology integration across the broader defense manufacturing sector.
