Capital Dynamics has acquired a ready-to-build 170 MW, four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Knockanure, County Kerry, marking its entry into the Irish market. The long-duration storage facility will assist in balancing grid stability and managing rising curtailment rates across Ireland's power network.
Global private asset manager Capital Dynamics has expanded its European clean energy portfolio through the acquisition of a ready-to-build battery energy storage system (BESS) in Knockanure, County Kerry in Ireland. Purchased from a group of private shareholders, the facility features 170 MW of grid connection capacity via the adjacent 110 kV Knockanure substation and offers a four-hour discharge duration. Planning approval for the project was secured in October 2025 and initial procurement and delivery planning are currently underway.
Capital Dynamics is an independent global private asset management firm established in 1988, specializing in clean energy infrastructure and private equity investments. The firm manages and advises on over USD 15 billion in assets globally across 14 international offices. EirGrid operates as the state-owned electric power transmission system operator in Ireland, responsible for managing the national grid and facilitating renewable energy integration.
This transaction marks the initial expansion of Capital Dynamics into the Republic of Ireland, targeting long-duration energy storage assets within the broader Irish Single Electricity Market. As Ireland accelerates its deployment of wind and solar resources, grid operators face increasing operational challenges tied to power curtailment and supply volatility. Deploying multi-hour battery infrastructure allows surplus clean electricity generated during low-demand periods to be stored and discharged during peak system requirements, directly enhancing transmission network reliability.
The investment underscores growing capital allocation toward utility-scale flexibility assets across Western Europe. For energy investors and infrastructure developers, Ireland represents an attractive storage market characterized by strong decarbonization policy mandates and a high proportion of variable renewable power. Battery storage installations provide critical grid support services, creating stable revenue opportunities while mitigating market risks associated with renewable energy curtailment.
