UNITED ARAB EMIRATES; AZERBAIJAN —Abu Dhabi-based energy entity XRG has completed its purchase of an equity stake in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC (SGC) from the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. SGC is a state-controlled Azerbaijani entity established to manage and finance integrated midstream infrastructure projects delivering natural gas from the Caspian region to international markets. The closing follows the fulfillment of all regulatory approvals and closing conditions, securing XRG's entrance into major export infrastructure traversing Central Asia and Europe.
This operational milestone cements an integrated Caspian energy platform for XRG. By connecting midstream infrastructure directly with upstream holdings—including a 30 percent stake in Azerbaijan's Absheron gas and condensate field and a 38 percent participating interest in Turkmenistan's offshore Block I concession—the organization ensures long-term route-to-market certainty. Block I currently yields approximately 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, backed by reserves exceeding 7 trillion cubic feet.
The transaction heavily impacts international gas distribution and regional energy supply chains. The 3,500-kilometer Southern Gas Corridor network possesses an annual transport capacity of up to 26 billion cubic meters, running from the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea through Georgia and Türkiye into Southern Europe. The network encompasses key infrastructure including the South Caucasus Pipeline, Trans Anatolian Pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline, and equity in the Azerbaijan Gas Supply Company.
For global investors and energy markets, this acquisition highlights a growing strategic alignment between the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan while expanding cross-border collaboration with state firm SOCAR. Controlling both strategic export capacity and upstream production optimizes operational efficiency, mitigates midstream bottleneck risks, and reinforces long-term energy security across European and regional consumer markets.
