City Utilities launches stormwater infrastructure upgrade backed by NFWF grant to reduce flooding risk

City Utilities has begun a stormwater infrastructure project aimed at reducing chronic flooding in residential neighborhoods. Supported by funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the initiative will expand drainage capacity, restore wetland habitat, and improve long-term resilience against heavy rainfall events.

City Utilities has initiated a stormwater management project along the Bullerman Drain corridor to address persistent flooding affecting residential areas between Maplecrest Road and Maple Terrace Drive. According to official disclosures, the project is supported by a $750,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and forms part of broader infrastructure improvements designed to strengthen local flood resilience. City Utilities, a municipal provider responsible for electricity, water, natural gas, and wastewater services, oversees infrastructure systems serving communities in the region. The organization said the project will reconstruct more than 1,000 feet of drainage channel, convert sections of the existing system into an inline configuration, and expand a stormwater basin to significantly increase storage capacity.

The retention pond created through the works is expected to hold nearly seven million gallons of stormwater, reducing the risk of downstream overflow during heavy rainfall. The initiative also includes ecological restoration, with approximately 7.5 acres of native wetland habitat planned as part of the drainage redesign. The restored landscape is expected to slow stormwater flows, reduce erosion, improve water quality, and support biodiversity. Additional community features such as walking paths are planned within the wetland area.

The infrastructure upgrade represents a $2 million investment and is scheduled for completion within about a year.

For construction firms, environmental engineering providers, and urban infrastructure developers, the project highlights growing demand for nature-based flood mitigation strategies. It also reflects increasing public-sector investment in stormwater resilience as cities respond to more frequent extreme weather events.
