ERITREA —Eritrea's climate resilience and rural utility infrastructure are set for significant improvements following a $9.82 million grant allocation from the African Development Fund (ADF). Implemented through the Fund's Climate Action Window in partnership with local authorities and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the initiative focuses on expanding essential water systems and enhancing public health facilities across vulnerable rural regions.
This developmental grant addresses acute regional water scarcity and infrastructure deficits aggravated by volatile environmental conditions. By constructing 21 new water delivery systems and rehabilitating 38 non-operational rural networks, the framework aims to shorten average travel distances to potable water sources down to 500 meters. Furthermore, the initiative encompasses targeted upgrades to sanitation facilities in 10 health clinics and 12 educational institutions, alongside constructing retention dams and forestry catchment zones to secure regional groundwater reserves.
The targeted investment reflects a critical push to stabilize basic public utilities in low-income Horn of Africa communities.
