Biotechnology firm CollPlant has agreed to acquire Israeli optical computing startup LightSolver in an equity-based deal. The transaction diversifies CollPlant's portfolio into high-performance photonic supercomputing while providing LightSolver resources to scale its proprietary room-temperature laser processing platform.

ISRAEL Biotechnology developer CollPlant Biotechnologies is acquiring LightSolver, an Israel-based deep-tech startup specializing in photonic computing architecture. Under the equity-centric agreement scheduled to close within days, CollPlant will issue over 3.7 million upfront ordinary shares alongside pre-funded warrants, milestone-linked warrants, and rollover options. The milestone structure directly ties equity distribution to LightSolver meeting specific technical and commercial metrics as it targets full platform availability in 2028.

LightSolver is a Tel Aviv-headquartered computing developer founded in 2020 by physicists from the Weizmann Institute. The company manufactures the Laser Processing Unit, an all-optical hardware platform that uses coupled laser interactions rather than electronic transistors to solve complex mathematical equations at room temperature. CollPlant Biotechnologies is an Israeli regenerative medicine firm focused on plant-based recombinant human collagen for 3D bioprinting and medical aesthetics.

The acquisition marks an unconventional strategic pivot, embedding an optical hardware developer within a biomedical enterprise. Traditional semiconductor architectures face physical limitations regarding energy consumption, latency, and thermal output when executing massive parallel calculations. LightSolver’s laser-based co-processor bypasses cryogenic requirements typical of quantum setups, offering immediate integration potential alongside existing central and graphics processing units for compute-heavy applications like partial differential equations and large-scale linear systems.

The transaction accelerates the commercial transition of photonic hardware into industrial workflows. Early commercial trials are already under way with major aerospace partners such as Boeing to simulate structural degradation and asset lifecycles. Additional evaluation involves global defense contractors, energy companies, and financial institutions applying the laser processing unit to physical artificial intelligence, multiphysics simulations, and complex optimization problems.

For enterprise technology leaders and institutional investors, the transaction signals growing commercial momentum behind alternative computing architectures.
