AUSTRALIA —Main Roads WA has selected CPB Contractors, part of CIMIC Group, to execute the major infrastructure enhancement of the Kwinana Freeway between Roe Highway and Safety Bay Road in Western Australia. CPB Contractors will lead the delivery alongside key project partners McConnell Dowell, Jacobs, and Arup. Generating revenue of approximately $250 million for CPB Contractors, the scope of work entails adding dedicated freeway lanes, widening bridges, upgrading safety barriers, and integrating smart transport technologies. Construction includes a 2.5km southbound lane between Roe Highway and Berrigan Drive, a 3.3km northbound lane from Russell Road to Beeliar Drive, an 11km lane expansion in both directions between Russell Road and Mortimer Road, and civil works to deploy coordinated ramp signals across eleven northbound locations.
This major development targets severe bottlenecking across one of Western Australia’s vital transport arteries, which accommodates heavy daily commuter traffic and freight logistics. By widening critical links and implementing Intelligent Transport Systems, the project addresses the infrastructure demands of Perth’s rapidly expanding urban and industrial zones. The capacity enhancements are structured to minimize traffic disruption during construction while significantly lowering travel times, elevating network resilience, and securing seamless connectivity between residential suburbs, employment hubs, and primary industrial centers.
From an industry standpoint, the project emphasizes a growing trend toward integrated alliance contracts that blend design, civil engineering, and digital traffic management solutions to optimize metropolitan transit networks. Furthermore, the contract mandates strong environmental, heritage, and social governance obligations, driving local economic development by creating targeted employment, skills training, and business opportunities for Aboriginal workers and Indigenous-owned enterprises across Western Australia.
For CIMIC Group, securing this contract consolidates its market leadership in tier-one civil infrastructure delivery while strengthening its order book and long-term earnings stability. CPB Contractors is an engineering and construction company with extensive experience in executing complex transportation infrastructure projects across Australasia. Main Roads WA is the Western Australian state government body responsible for managing and maintaining the region's road network and transport infrastructure. The project underscores sustained state and federal government capital expenditure toward critical infrastructure, offering a positive outlook for the region's broader construction supply chain.
