A subsidiary of China Petroleum Engineering has finalized a $4.6 billion agreement to expand the Galkynysh gas field in Turkmenistan. This project, set to commence in 2026, involves surface engineering and processing infrastructure to bolster gas supply chains between Central Asia and Chinese energy markets.

According to official regulatory disclosures, a subsidiary of China Petroleum Engineering (CPE) has finalized a $4.6 billion contract for the surface engineering and expansion of the Galkynysh gas field. CPE is a technical services provider listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and is a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation. The project, which represents the fourth phase of the field’s development, includes the construction of infrastructure capable of processing 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Construction is expected to commence in 2026 and reach completion within 51 months.

This development significantly bolsters energy stability between Central Asia and the Far East. The Galkynysh field is currently the primary source for Turkmenistan’s 30 billion cubic meters of annual gas exports to China. By increasing extraction and processing capabilities, the agreement secures a long-term supply chain for one of the world's most significant energy consumption corridors. For stakeholders in the energy and heavy engineering sectors, this highlights the continued prioritization of natural gas as a bridge fuel for industrial growth.

The project also carries substantial strategic weight for international investors, signaling a deepening of bilateral industrial cooperation and long-term capital commitment in the Caspian region. The scale of the contract suggests a preference for integrated engineering and construction solutions to manage the complexities of large-scale extraction. This move further consolidates the regional energy landscape, reinforcing established export routes while providing a multi-year roadmap for infrastructure investment through the turn of the decade.
