CSBP expands thyssenkrupp Uhde emissions technology across Western Australian production facilities

CSBP, a division of WesCEF, has contracted thyssenkrupp Uhde to deploy its EnviNOx® abatement technology at two additional nitric acid plants in Kwinana. The move aims to eliminate over 98% of nitrous oxide emissions, significantly advancing the company’s 2030 decarbonization targets for the mining and agricultural sectors.

CSBP, the chemicals and fertilizers arm of Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers (WesCEF), has selected thyssenkrupp Uhde to install patented EnviNOx® technology at its NAAN1 and NAAN2 nitric acid plants in Kwinana, Western Australia.

This follows a successful 2025 implementation at the NAAN3 facility, which achieved nitrous oxide (N2O) outlet concentrations below 1 ppmv. The specialized systems utilize catalysts manufactured by BASF to neutralize N2O, a greenhouse gas with 270 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides (NOx). thyssenkrupp Uhde is a global engineering firm specializing in industrial plant design and chemical process technologies.

CSBP is a major Australian supplier of high-quality chemicals and fertilizers, primarily serving the regional mining and farming industries. This expansion is projected to abate over 60,000 tons of CO2-equivalent emissions annually, directly supporting WesCEF’s mandate to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030.

For industrial stakeholders, this development highlights the growing commercial viability of high-efficiency abatement systems in hard-to-abate sectors. By integrating these systems across its entire nitric acid production suite, CSBP provides a blueprint for large-scale industrial decarbonization. The initiative carries significant implications for the global supply chain, as it allows for the production of lower-carbon ammonium nitrate, helping downstream partners in the mining and agricultural sectors meet their own environmental, social, and governance (ESG) benchmarks while maintaining operational scale.
