Danish Armed Forces award double-digit million euro naval defense contract to Rheinmetall for MASS decoy systems

The Danish Armed Forces have commissioned German defense tech supplier Rheinmetall to outfit its naval frigates with Multi Ammunition Softkill Systems and Omnitrap-ER decoys, strengthening Scandinavian maritime security through a multiyear procurement and long-term replenishment framework.

The Danish Armed Forces serve as the unified military organization responsible for defending the sovereignty and security of the Kingdom of Denmark across land, air, and maritime domains. Rheinmetall AG is a Düsseldorf-based integrated technology group specializing in military vehicles, defense systems, naval countermeasure capabilities, and armament manufacturing.

Under a newly signed agreement in Copenhagen, the Danish Armed Forces awarded a contract to Rheinmetall to supply multiple Multi Ammunition Softkill Systems (MASS) alongside Omnitrap-ER decoys. The procurement involves equipping the Royal Danish Navy's Absalon-class and Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates, as well as providing training assets to the Royal Danish Navy's Weapons School. Financial recognition for the double-digit million euro order will occur in the second quarter of 2026, with equipment deliveries scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027. The agreement also establishes a long-term supply contract lasting up to 21 years to support ongoing ammunition replenishment for the fleet.

This strategic contract strengthens maritime defense infrastructure across key European waterways, including the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Arctic theater. The MASS platform deploys multispectral countermeasures across radar, ultraviolet, electro-optical, laser, and infrared wavelengths, shielding surface combatants against incoming anti-ship missiles and sensor-guided threats in both deep-water and littoral environments. By selecting this technology, Denmark aligns its surface fleet countermeasures with neighboring allies, establishing MASS as a standardized soft-kill protection system across all Scandinavian navies and expanding its operational adoption to 18 nations globally.

For the defense manufacturing and naval shipbuilding sector, the deal underscores rising capital investment in modular, retrofittable ship protection systems capable of seamless integration into existing combat management systems. Long-term defense framework agreements spanning several decades highlight a market trend toward securing resilient supply chains and sustained lifecycle support, guaranteeing recurring revenue streams for primary contractors while ensuring high operational readiness for naval fleets.
