JAPAN —Japan Offshore Marine (JOM), a joint venture between marine engineering firm DEME and local partner Penta-Ocean Construction, has been awarded a major offshore engineering and vessel charter contract for the Oga-Katagami-Akita Offshore Wind Project. Under the agreement with project developer Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC, JOM will manage the transport and offshore installation of 21 Vestas V236-15 MW wind turbines. Marine operations are scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027 using the jack-up installation vessel Sea Challenger, which will operate under a Japanese flag.
This development represents a critical technical milestone for Asia Pacific's renewable energy infrastructure. The initiative marks the first time 15 MW-class wind turbines will be deployed in Japan, and represents the first commercial installation of turbines of this scale outside Europe and China. DEME specializes in global dredging and offshore energy infrastructure, while Penta-Ocean Construction is a prominent Japanese marine contractor specializing in coastal engineering. The contract underscores a significant shift toward higher-capacity turbines to optimize clean energy yields in complex marine environments.
