Deutsche Telekom deepens Poland broadband strategy with €1 billion Fiberhost and Inea deal

Deutsche Telekom plans to spend about €1 billion to acquire Polish fiber operator Fiberhost and broadband provider Inea from Macquarie Asset Management and minority shareholders. The transaction would give T-Mobile Polska direct access to a fiber network reaching more than 1.4 million homes and add over 300,000 customers.

Deutsche Telekom has agreed to acquire 100% of Fiberhost and Inea in a transaction valued at approximately €1 billion on an enterprise basis. The sellers include Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 5, managed by Macquarie Asset Management, alongside minority shareholders. Completion remains subject to customary competition approval in Poland.

The transaction materially changes T-Mobile Polska’s fixed-line position by combining its nationwide mobile and 5G capabilities with infrastructure and customers that are already established in the Polish broadband market. Fiberhost’s open-access network passes more than 1.4 million homes, while Inea contributes a customer base exceeding 300,000. Fiberhost will continue providing network access to internet service providers on a transparent and non-discriminatory basis.

The acquisition matters because Poland’s telecommunications market is increasingly shaped by converged services, in which operators bundle mobile, fixed broadband and related digital products. T-Mobile Polska has expanded its fixed offering through wholesale arrangements since 2018, but ownership of a large FTTH platform would give the business greater control over network assets, product development and customer economics.

For the Polish telecom sector, the deal could intensify competition among operators with substantial fixed and mobile infrastructure. It also places greater strategic importance on fiber networks as long-term digital infrastructure supporting households, enterprises and the wider digital economy. The continued wholesale availability of Fiberhost’s network is relevant to other service providers that rely on third-party infrastructure for broadband coverage.

Deutsche Telekom is a major European telecommunications group with operations spanning mobile and fixed networks, broadband, IT and digital services. T-Mobile Polska is its Polish operating company, while Fiberhost specializes in open-access fiber infrastructure and Inea operates broadband and television services. The acquisition therefore combines infrastructure ownership with an established retail customer platform under one telecommunications group.

For businesses and investors, the transaction highlights the value operators place on controlling high-quality fixed infrastructure as mobile and broadband services converge. It could support greater scale for T-Mobile Polska while reducing reliance on wholesale arrangements for part of its fixed-network footprint. At the same time, regulatory review and the integration of the acquired assets will remain key considerations before the strategic benefits can be fully realized.
