The Department of War has awarded Lompoc Unified School District a $45.4 million federal grant for a $60.5 million project to renovate and construct a new Manzanita Public Charter School at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The project will serve 522 students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade, addressing facility deficiencies identified on the 2019 Priority List.

The Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation has awarded Lompoc Unified School District a $45.4 million grant as the federal share of a $60.5 million project to renovate and construct a new Manzanita Public Charter School at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, according to an official announcement. The project will support 522 students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade.

The funding is provided under the Department's Public Schools on Military Installations Program, which prioritises military installations with schools having the most serious facility capacity and condition deficiencies as determined by the Deputy Secretary of Defense's Priority List. Manzanita Public Charter School was ranked #40 on the 2019 list.

A multi-disciplined Federal Evaluation Team, including representatives from the Assistant Secretaries of the Air Force, Army, Navy, and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, reviewed the project to ensure the award addresses identified deficiencies.

This development matters for defence community infrastructure, where school quality directly affects military recruitment and retention. Vandenberg Space Force Base, a critical installation for space launch and missile testing, requires adequate educational facilities for service members' families.

For the education construction sector, the grant represents a significant federal investment in military base school infrastructure. Stakeholders including defence families, local contractors, and the base command stand to benefit from improved educational capacity. The project also strengthens partnerships between the community and the installation, supporting long-term base viability.
