The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is contributing $30 million to a $180 million syndicated loan for Polynickel West Africa Holding. The financing restructures bridge debt used to acquire a major nickel asset in Ivory Coast, bolstering critical raw material production for the global energy transition.

COTE DIVOIRE (IVORY COAST) According to official disclosures, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a multilateral development bank focused on private sector growth, is providing a $30 million secured loan to Polynickel West Africa Holding. This capital forms part of a broader $180 million syndicated facility alongside several international lenders, refinancing bridge debt utilized to acquire a controlling interest in Compagnie Minière du Bafing (CMB).

The transaction directly impacts the critical minerals sector by ensuring the long-term operational stability of CMB, which manages one of the world's most substantial nickel reserves. Because nickel is classified as a vital raw material by major advanced economies, securing its extraction is essential for global energy transition technologies, heavy infrastructure, and stainless steel manufacturing.

For the West African region, specifically Ivory Coast, this financing catalyzes local capacity building. The operator has committed to stringent environmental and social compliance frameworks, implementing specialized technical training for mine personnel and contractors in health, safety, and engineering. This aligns with the EBRD’s broader strategic objectives in Ivory Coast, which became an operational jurisdiction for the bank in 2025, to stimulate private-sector competitiveness and sustainable economic development.

From a market perspective, the syndication demonstrates robust institutional appetite for funding critical mineral assets in emerging markets. Investors and corporate stakeholders in the clean energy supply chain will view this refinancing as a stabilizing mechanism that de-risks long-term nickel availability, ultimately supporting the scalability of electric vehicle and renewable energy infrastructure globally.
