Ecoener has won 15-year power purchase agreements for two solar plants in Guatemala, totalling 200 MWp and incorporating battery storage. The Cocales and La Hulera projects, the country's first utility-scale solar-plus-storage facilities, will begin commercial operation in 2028, expanding Ecoener's Guatemalan portfolio to 362 MW.
Ecoener has been awarded two 15-year power purchase agreements for the Cocales and La Hulera photovoltaic plants in Guatemala, according to an official announcement. The 140 MWp Cocales and 60 MWp La Hulera facilities will be the country's first solar projects to incorporate battery storage systems, with 20 MW/80 MWh and 10 MW/40 MWh BESS respectively.
The contracts were secured in Guatemala's largest power auction, which attracted 51 technical bids for approximately 4,700 MW of capacity under the government's Power Generation Expansion Plan. Commercial operation is scheduled for 2028. Ecoener is a Spanish renewable energy developer with operations across Europe and the Americas. With the commissioning of these plants, the company's Guatemalan portfolio will reach 362 MW, consolidating its position in the Central American market.
The company's total capacity, including projects under construction, now stands at 815 MW. This development matters for Central America's energy storage sector, where solar-plus-storage projects are emerging as critical tools for grid stability and peak demand management. Guatemala's growing electricity demand and focus on energy independence create opportunities for hybrid renewable projects. For the renewable energy industry, the PPAs demonstrate the commercial viability of storage-integrated solar in competitive auctions.
Stakeholders including equipment suppliers, grid operators, and industrial consumers stand to benefit from enhanced reliability and reduced intermittency. The projects also support Guatemala's energy diversification strategy.
