UK-based Econotherm has secured a contract to provide a 6.6 MW heat pipe air-preheater to a refinery in Thailand, scheduled for delivery in 2027. This agreement marks the firm’s first foray into the Asian refining market and highlights a growing shift toward specialized waste heat recovery solutions to improve operational reliability and energy efficiency.

Econotherm, a UK-based developer of waste heat recovery systems, has been commissioned to supply a 6.6 MW heat pipe-based fired heater air-preheater for a significant refinery project in Thailand. According to official disclosures, the proprietary components will be manufactured at the company's facility in Bridgend, Wales, with engineering work already underway for a scheduled delivery date in 2027. Econotherm is a specialized technology firm that designs and manufactures heat pipe heat exchangers tailored for high-temperature industrial applications and waste heat recovery.

This development signifies the company's inaugural entry into the Asian refining landscape and represents its eighth commercial reference within the global refining sector. The expansion follows a prior 2025 agreement to supply three units for a refinery in Rotterdam. The increasing adoption of heat pipe technology reflects a strategic move by industrial operators to optimize energy recovery while mitigating maintenance risks. Unlike conventional tubular or finned exchangers, heat pipe designs utilize inherent redundancies to prevent single-point failures and effectively manage acid gas condensation risks.

For investors and global energy stakeholders, this contract underscores a rising demand for resilient energy-saving infrastructure within Southeast Asia’s refining hubs. As regional operators face stricter efficiency requirements and higher uptime demands, the shift toward technologies that minimize downtime while maximizing thermal output is becoming a critical component of long-term asset management strategies.
