Egypt signs agricultural research pact to commercialise climate-smart technologies

Egypt's Agricultural Research Center has partnered with CGIAR to accelerate the commercialisation of agricultural innovations. The agreement prioritises climate-smart agriculture and technology transfer, aiming to bridge laboratory research and market-ready solutions for enhanced food security and private-sector engagement.

Egypt is deepening its collaboration with international research bodies to translate scientific findings into deployable agricultural technologies. The Agricultural Research Center (ARC) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), both part of the CGIAR consortium.

The partnership, formalised in the presence of Minister Alaa Farouk, focuses on applied research in biodiversity and resilient food systems. A central component of the collaboration is the 'AgriTech4Egypt' initiative, a programme designed to convert research into market-ready innovations.

The initiative will leverage pilot projects and private-sector partnerships to facilitate technology transfer. Capacity-building efforts will involve training programmes and the use of research facilities for field trials with farmers. This development matters as it directly targets the commercialisation gap in agricultural research, aiming to boost productivity and sustainability.

For Egyptian agribusinesses and farmers, it promises access to advanced climate-smart technologies. The focus on private-sector collaboration opens avenues for investment in agricultural technology, positioning Egypt as a potential hub for innovation in the MENA region's food systems. The Agricultural Research Center is the Egyptian government's principal agency for agricultural scientific research and development.
