AUSTRIA —High-speed digital infrastructure expansion across Austria has received a financial boost following a EUR 75 million debt commitment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to fibre infrastructure provider öGIG. This capital injection represents the initial tranche of a planned financing scheme, complemented by commercial bank funding to establish a total project envelope of EUR 225 million. The initiative focuses on deploying open-access fibre networks throughout six Austrian federal states, targeting regions where high-capacity digital connectivity remains constrained.
öGIG is an Austrian digital infrastructure operator founded in 2019 and wholly owned by the Allianz Group. The enterprise deploys and manages open-access fibre networks that enable multiple independent internet service providers to utilize identical physical infrastructure, thereby fostering market competition and service choice for end users.
This capital deployment addresses persistent digital disparities between metropolitan centers and rural communities. Reliable gigabit-capable connections are increasingly essential for modern commercial operations, distributed workforces, and advanced digital services, including artificial intelligence applications. By expanding broadband availability outside major urban hubs, the project aims to reinforce regional economic resilience and secure long-term competitiveness for local enterprises.
The intervention aligns with regional and continental policy objectives, specifically supporting the European Union Digital Decade targets and national broadband strategies aimed at achieving comprehensive gigabit coverage. The backing from the EU InvestEU framework underscores institutional commitment to advancing structural technology investments and sustainable economic development across member states.
