The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed to provide Fugro with €150 million in financing for the expansion of its remote maritime survey operations and development of advanced sensing and underwater robotics technologies. The programme includes up to 25 next-generation uncrewed surface vessels, supporting offshore wind development and monitoring of critical subsea infrastructure across Europe.

LUXEMBOURG; NETHERLANDS —Fugro has secured a €150 million financing facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expand its remotely operated maritime survey capabilities and invest in technology development. The funding will support a phased rollout of second-generation uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), alongside research into remote sensing systems and underwater robotics. The deployment plan covers up to 25 medium-sized, long-range vessels designed to gather seabed data and conduct technical assessments of offshore sites and assets.

The programme targets a growing operational requirement across Europe's offshore energy and connectivity infrastructure. Developers of offshore wind farms, subsea electricity interconnectors and power networks depend on detailed marine surveys to assess locations, support construction and monitor asset condition. Fugro's vessels, working with underwater robots, can transmit subsea information to remote operating centres in real time, allowing technical teams to analyse data without relying entirely on conventional crewed survey ships.

Replacing some traditional survey-vessel activity with USVs could also change the cost and environmental profile of offshore operations. Fugro states that these vessels can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 90% compared with conventional survey vessels. Lower fuel use can reduce operational emissions, while remote operations may limit the number of personnel required offshore. Actual benefits will depend on vessel utilisation, survey conditions and the extent to which uncrewed systems can replace conventional operations.

The investment is relevant to Europe's energy transition because offshore wind and cross-border electricity links require reliable information about seabed conditions and subsea infrastructure. More capable remote survey systems can support site evaluation, construction planning and ongoing inspection, potentially improving the availability of data for project developers, utilities and marine engineering contractors. The technology also has applications in monitoring other offshore assets where inspection access is difficult or costly.

For Fugro, the long-term facility provides funding for equipment deployment and research without requiring the entire fleet expansion to occur at once. A phased approach allows investment to be aligned with customer demand and operational readiness. For investors and offshore-industry participants, the key indicators will include the pace of vessel deployment, commercial uptake of remote survey services and the extent to which productivity and fuel savings translate into stronger project economics. The announcement does not specify a completion date for the full deployment programme.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is the European Union's long-term lending institution, financing projects aligned with EU policy priorities, including infrastructure, innovation and climate action. Fugro is a Netherlands-based geo-data company providing survey, mapping and monitoring services for the built and natural environments, including offshore energy and subsea infrastructure. The financing links European institutional capital with maritime technologies supporting the development and maintenance of critical offshore assets.
