EIB Global and First City Monument Bank have launched an €85 million credit facility targeted at Nigeria's agricultural sector, with a primary focus on expanding local processing capacities across the cocoa and dairy value chains while meeting international environmental standards.

NIGERIA —EIB Global, the international development arm of the European Investment Bank Group, has joined forces with First City Monument Bank to establish an €85 million funding facility dedicated to the Nigerian agricultural sector. The initiative was unveiled during the joint Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok. At least 70% of the capital will be directed specifically toward the cocoa and dairy industries to upgrade domestic processing infrastructure, enhance supply chain transparency, and support agricultural cooperatives.

This strategic capital injection addresses critical liquidity and financing shortfalls that have historically hindered smallholder farmers and agribusinesses from transitioning into high-value processing operations. By prioritizing the dairy and cocoa sectors, the initiative aims to bridge market gaps, increase local production efficiencies, and integrate Nigerian producers into broader international trade networks. Furthermore, the inclusion of dedicated technical assistance helps local financial institutions and agricultural operators better manage environmental and social risks.

The development carries significant implications for regional trade dynamics, particularly regarding compliance with strict regulatory frameworks such as the European Union Regulation on Deforestation. By aligning local agricultural output with international environmental standards, the project fosters sustainable rural development while opening commercial channels for European businesses seeking reliable raw material supplies. Stakeholders ranging from independent farmers to industrial processors stand to benefit from structured long-term financing that supports sustainable food systems.

For market participants and institutional investors, the intervention signals a growing emphasis on structured ESG-compliant financing within emerging agricultural markets. Headquartered in Luxembourg, the European Investment Bank serves as the long-term lending institution of the European Union, focusing on sustainable development, climate action, and economic cohesion globally through specialised arms like EIB Global.
