EIB Global commits EUR 40 million to Speedinvest for African tech expansion

The European Investment Bank’s development arm has pledged EUR 40 million to Speedinvest’s inaugural Africa-dedicated fund. The capital aims to scale high-growth startups in fintech, healthcare, and mobility across the continent, with a strategic focus on gender-inclusive investing and cross-border digital integration.

EIB Global has finalized a EUR 40 million investment into the first Africa-centric venture capital vehicle managed by Speedinvest, a prominent European firm specializing in early-stage technology. According to official disclosures, the fund will target innovation hubs including Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa, while extending reach into emerging markets such as Ghana and Morocco.

The initiative is designed to bolster mobile-based services in the payments, education, and logistics sectors. This development marks a significant step in the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, which seeks to strengthen economic corridors between Europe and Africa. By providing institutional backing to an experienced venture manager, the EIB is facilitating deeper capital linkages that allow African startups to access international expertise and follow-on funding.

Notably, the fund adheres to the 2X Challenge criteria, mandating that at least 30% of the capital support gender-smart initiatives or female-led enterprises. For institutional investors and multinational corporations, this commitment signals growing confidence in the maturity of the African digital economy despite global macroeconomic headwinds. The focus on financial and digital inclusion directly impacts the scalability of consumer-facing platforms, creating a more robust infrastructure for regional trade.

As digital transformation accelerates, this infusion of capital is expected to catalyze job creation within the tech sector and broaden access to essential services for underserved populations across the continent. Speedinvest is a Tier-1 European venture capital firm that manages over EUR 1 billion in assets and focuses on pre-seed and seed-stage technology companies.
