EIB provides €146 million to Kronospan for industrial decarbonisation and energy resilience in central europe

The European Investment Bank has extended €146 million to Kronospan to deploy solar generation, battery storage, and electric fleet infrastructure across its central European manufacturing sites. The financing supports EU climate objectives and strengthens sustainable building material supply chains.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €146 million loan facility for Kronospan, a major wood-based panel manufacturer, to accelerate decarbonisation and energy independence measures across its production network in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

According to official disclosures, the funds will finance rooftop and ground-mounted solar photovoltaic systems, integrated battery storage, and the replacement of fossil-fuel-powered forklifts and lorries with electric vehicles.

This development matters as it illustrates how multilateral lenders are directly supporting energy-intensive industries to align with the EU’s REPowerEU initiative and climate action targets. The investment is concentrated in cohesion regions, reinforcing regional development while simultaneously bolstering the supply chain for sustainable construction materials—a critical input for Europe’s housing agenda.

For businesses and investors, the transaction signals increasing availability of large-scale green financing for industrial retrofitting, particularly in sectors linked to construction and manufacturing. Kronospan’s shift toward on-site renewable generation and electric logistics sets a precedent for operational resilience amid volatile energy markets.

The EIB, the EU’s long-term lending institution, continues to prioritise projects that integrate industrial competitiveness with emissions reduction and energy security. The European Investment Bank is the lending arm of the European Union, focused on financing projects that advance EU policy goals, including climate action and regional cohesion. Kronospan is a leading European producer of wood-based panels, supplying materials for construction, furniture, and flooring industries.
