Eku Energy has entered the German energy storage market by acquiring a 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) under development in Lower Saxony. The project is designed to strengthen grid resilience, provide black-start capability, and support Germany’s transition toward a more flexible renewable electricity system.

Eku Energy has announced its first investment in Germany through the development of the Dion battery energy storage system (BESS), a 400 MW/1,600 MWh project located in the municipality of Lamspringe in Lower Saxony. According to the company's official announcement, the facility is expected to become Germany's largest battery energy storage installation of its type, with commissioning targeted for the end of 2029.

The project will be directly connected to the national transmission grid and is designed to provide black-start capability, enabling faster restoration of electricity networks following major outages. Beyond strengthening grid reliability, the system is expected to supply essential balancing and flexibility services as Germany continues expanding renewable energy generation.

As part of the development strategy, local developer NION will continue advancing the project until it reaches Ready-to-Build status under a development services agreement, while Eku Energy will oversee overall project development, technology selection, and design. The company also plans to collaborate with Fluence on lithium iron phosphate battery technology during the project's development.

The investment marks Germany as Eku Energy's sixth operating market and supports its broader strategy of building a long-term energy storage portfolio in Europe, including plans to establish a German office in 2027. For utilities, grid operators, renewable energy developers, and institutional investors, the project reflects growing demand for large-scale storage assets that improve power system stability while creating additional commercial opportunities in electricity and flexibility markets.

Eku Energy is a global battery energy storage developer and operator jointly owned by the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation and a fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management, focusing on long-term investment in utility-scale energy storage infrastructure across international markets.
