ISRAEL; SPAIN —Ellomay Capital, through its Spanish subsidiary Ellomay Solar, has obtained grid access and connection approval to construct a 22.2 MW / 100.3 MWh battery energy storage system at its existing photovoltaic generation facility in Talaván, Cáceres, Spain. The regulatory clearance includes a dedicated 22.2 MW charging permit from the regional transmission network, allowing the system to draw power directly from the electrical grid during off-peak periods. Groundbreaking for the four-and-a-half-hour duration storage project is slated for the first quarter of 2027, with full commercial operation targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027 on land currently under lease by the firm.
Co-locating utility-scale battery storage with established solar operational infrastructure addresses persistent renewable generation curtailment and negative power pricing trends across Southern Europe. By securing dual-directional grid rights, energy asset developers can capture revenue from arbitrage opportunities-charging during low-cost or negative price intervals and discharging during peak demand hours-while simultaneously offering essential ancillary services to national system operators seeking network stability.
The regulatory authorization reflects an accelerating policy shift across European energy markets toward hybrid generation and long-duration storage deployment. Renewable energy infrastructure investors, European grid operators, and power trading desks face an evolving market landscape where standalone solar assets increasingly depend on battery integration to maintain long-term commercial viability and hedge against power purchase agreement volatility.
This strategic move allows clean energy operators to optimize portfolio assets across high-penetration renewable regions like the Iberian peninsula. Ellomay Capital is an Israel-headquartered renewable energy developer listed on the NYSE American and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, with power generation assets and projects spread across Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Israel, and the United States.
