Equinor and its subsidiary Rio Energy have commenced commercial operations at the 140 MW Serra da Babilônia Solar facility in Brazil, co-located with a 223 MW wind farm. The hybrid complex enhances grid stability and operational efficiencies, marking Equinor’s first integrated solar-wind asset globally.
Equinor has started commercial power production at the 140 MW Serra da Babilônia Solar facility in Brazil, co-located with the 223 MW Serra da Babilônia Wind farm. The combined 363 MW hybrid complex represents the company’s first integrated solar and wind asset within its global power portfolio.
The hybrid configuration leverages the complementary generation profiles of wind and solar resources, helping reduce intermittency and improve grid reliability. By sharing existing infrastructure and operational services at the site, the project achieves cost efficiencies compared with standalone renewable installations.
Serra da Babilônia Solar is expected to generate approximately 236 GWh annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 143,000 Brazilian households. Power produced from the facility will be commercialized in the Brazilian market through Danske Commodities, Equinor’s energy trading arm.
The project is the first delivered by Rio Energy since becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Equinor in 2023. Brazil remains a strategic growth market for the company, where it is expanding its renewable portfolio alongside its oil and gas operations, including the Raia gas development. With this addition, Equinor’s operational renewable capacity in Brazil now totals approximately 600 MW across solar and wind assets.
